The distribution of rights, duties, and obligations among interlocutors or
characters in and via conversations or narratives. The goal is to understand
how such rights, duties, and obligations both shape and are influenced by
social institutions. The emphasis is on social action, as opposed to the
notion that "social behavior is a response to a social stimulus" (Harré,
Moghaddam, Cairnie, Rothbart, & Sabat, 2009, p. 5). Rather than using
causality or hypotheses to explain the meanings connected with social
activity, the theory capitalizes on what individuals do and say in the
course of a discussion. Because the theory focuses on the present instant in
order to explain acts in a moral landscape, it incorporates beliefs and
practices as well as historical and social components.
In the ever-evolving landscape of linguistics, a realm where language
intersects with identity, culture, and social positioning, emerges the
profound relevance of positioning theory. This book embarks on a journey
through the intricate corridors of applied linguistics, wielding positioning
theory as a guiding beacon to illuminate the multifaceted nuances of
language acquisition, identity construction, and the dynamic interplay
between the two.
My fascination with positioning theory was kindled during my doctoral
tenure at the University of Texas, Austin. As a fledgling scholar, my
inquisitiveness found solace in the realm of identity studies, a flame
fueled by the profound insights gleaned from Bonny Norton's seminal work,
"Identity and Language Learning: Gender, Ethnicity, and Educational Change."
Norton's narratives of five immigrant women navigating the realms of English
language acquisition and utilization resonated deeply within me, echoing the
echoes of my own immigrant experience as a non-native English speaker in the
United States.
Beyond the confines of grammar, vocabulary, and linguistic cadence,
Norton's revelations unveil a deeper truth: the acquisition of a second
language is a transformative odyssey, one that not only mirrors our identity
but actively sculpts it. This epiphany catalyzed my quest to delve deeper
into the nexus of language acquisition, identity formation, and the
overarching influence of positioning theory in this paradigm.
This book attempts to traverse the fertile terrain of applied linguistics,
where positioning theory serves as a fulcrum to understand the intricate
dance between language, identity, and social dynamics. Through a tapestry
woven with scholarly insights, empirical studies, and experiential
narratives, we shall embark on a voyage to unravel the threads binding
language learning and the construction of selfhood.
Join me in exploring the corridors of language acquisition, where every
utterance echoes a narrative, every syntax bears a tale, and every
linguistic encounter becomes a pivotal moment in the kaleidoscopic journey
of identity and language intertwining.
In the intricate tapestry of language acquisition, identity formation, and
social dynamics, the lens of positioning theory unveils a kaleidoscope of
insights and revelations. As we conclude this exploration into the realms of
applied linguistics, the resonance of positioning theory in understanding
the nuanced interplay between language and selfhood reverberates
profoundly.
Throughout this journey, we've traced the contours of language acquisition as more than a mere cognitive exercise; it is a transformative odyssey, weaving the fabric of one's identity within the intricate threads of linguistic expression. The discourse surrounding positioning theory has unveiled the profound impact of language on shaping, not just reflecting, our identities, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for the intricate relationship between language and self.
